Effective from July 1, 2017 if you want Class A (commercial truck) driver’s license you will need to complete mandatory training before taking your road test. For A class lessons in Mississauga, the Mandatory entry-level training MELT will include at least 103.5 hours of instructional time. It will also cover the entry-level knowledge and skills needed to safely operate a large truck on Ontario’s roads.


Effective July 1, 2017, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has implemented mandatory entry-level training for commercial Class A truck drivers.

All new drivers attempting the Class A road test on or after July 1, 2017 will have to successfully complete the mandatory entry-level training course before attempting their Class A Road Test. Safety First Truck Driver Academy Inc. Is one of the few qualified schools in Ontario delivering the Mandatory entry-level (MELT) training program. The biggest reason the province made this change was to ensure that all new commercial Class A truck drivers are trained to the same minimum standard before taking the Class A road test.

Duration: 103.5 hours over 5 weeks.

This program includes all mandatory objectives set forth in the Ministry of Transportation’s Commercial Truck Driver Training Standard (Class A), released July 2016. Subjects of the program include:

This program includes both classroom and practical training. The hands-on training takes place in the yard and on the road using a tractor-trailer, while under the instruction of a qualified trainer. Students will also engage in various classroom activities to help prepare them for a career of a professional truck driver. At least 18 years old.

Valid Class G licence or higher.

Passing mark on the applicable knowledge test.

Mandatory entry-level training must be completed and recorded on your driver's record prior to the road test

Ability to meet vision standards.

Satisfactory medical examination report.

Passing mark on the applicable road test at DriveTest or from an MTO-recognized authority.

Any truck/tractor-trailer or combination of motor vehicle and towed vehicles where the towed vehicles exceed a total gross weight of 4,600 kilograms. Class A licence holders may also drive vehicles in Classes D, G, and A with condition (R). A Class A licence does not permit you to drive a bus carrying passengers, a motorcycle, or a moped.

With Condition R: Drivers with a restricted Class A licence condition are prohibited from operating a motor vehicle pulling double trailers or a trailer with air brakes. Class A (with Condition R) licence holders may also drive vehicles in Classes D and G.
